Most Stapelia varieties are furry in appearance and emit a strong odour of rotting meat. The largest species is Stapelia Gigantea, its flowers can grow up to 41cm in diameter. The odour emitted serves to attract flies which are the plants natural pollinators. The flies lay their eggs around the coronae of the flower.

Stapelia are great container plants or used as a feature in any raised garden bed. Best to keep them a little further away from your living space to avoid it’s nasty odour!
